Having a good grasp of your car insurance policy aids in choosing appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. The terms used in a policy can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring. Listed below are the usual coverages found on the average car insurance policy.
Your UM/UIM coverage provides protection when other motorists are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include injuries to you and your family and damage to your Honda Prelude.
Since many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage should not be overlooked.
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision insurance covers things such as colliding with a tree, rolling your car, backing into a parked car and crashing into a ditch. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to bring the cost down.
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, hail damage, vandalism, damage from flooding and theft. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
This protects you from damage that occurs to a person or their property that is your fault. This coverage protects you against claims from other people, and doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show policy limits of 50/100/50 which means $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $100,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property.
Liability can pay for things such as structural damage, pain and suffering, emergency aid, bail bonds and medical expenses. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but consider buying higher limits if possible.
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for expenses such as doctor visits, prosthetic devices, dental work and ambulance fees. The coverages can be utilized in addition to your health insurance program or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover all vehicle occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Cheaper insurance coverage can be sourced on the web and from local agencies, so you need to quote insurance coverage with both to have the best selection. There are still a few companies who do not provide internet price quotes and many times these small insurance companies work with local independent agents.
As you go through the steps to switch your coverage, make sure you don’t buy poor coverage just to save money. In too many instances, an insured dropped uninsured motorist or liability limits to discover at claim time that saving that couple of dollars actually costed them tens of thousands. The aim is to purchase a proper amount of coverage at the best cost and still be able to protect your assets.

I live in West Valley City, UT. Received prices from Liberty Mutual, AAA, Nationwide, and a couple others for my Honda and I’m now saving $21 a month. Anyone else drop full coverage?

For me, Allstate was by far the cheapest in Greensboro, NC.

I think I’m paying too much. From a town just southwest of Jackson, MS. Received quotes with MetLife, Erie, Allstate, and Auto-Owners for my Prelude and I’m now saving $18 a month. They have a lot of discounts available. Are quotes cheaper online? I don’t have comp or collision coverage.

Can I get replacement cost coverage for a 1992 Honda Prelude?
Quintin Bradford
Thought I’d throw in my experience. I’m in the suburbs of Green Bay, Wisconsin. I don’t recall every quote but I ended up saving about $30 each month. I even had a DUI years ago. Next renewal I’ll just do liability.

IMHO Des Moines, IA seems to have good rates from Progressive.
Fernanda Armstrong
Cheaper not always better. From northwest of Springfield, MA. Quoted prices from State Farm, AAA, and Encompass for my Honda and saved $115 a year. Good multi-policy discounts. Not sure if rates are cheaper online or not. Liability only on my Prelude.

Cheap car insurance? What’s that? I’m in the north part of New Orleans, Louisiana. I got free quotes with GEICO, The General, and Erie for my Prelude and saved $119 a year. Left Hartford to switch. Good multi-policy discounts. I’m thinking about dropping full coverage though.
Melva Baldwin
Hope my rates come down. I live just to the west of Greensboro, NC. Got quotes with State Farm, American Family, Encompass, and The General for my 1992 Honda Prelude and I’m now saving $19 a month. Book value doesn’t justify full coverage anymore.
Debora Levine
Anyone understand their policy?
Ardath Williamson
Does GEICO have good customer service?

If you have a clean record and live in the vicinity of Augusta, GA, check out Progressive. They seem to be cheaper. They have free quotes online. It’s only liability tho.
