Save on 1995 Land Rover Discovery Car Insurance Rates

Finding cheap auto insurance is hard for people new to quoting coverage prices online. With literally dozens of companies, it can quickly become a burden to locate the lowest premium rates.

It’s a good idea to take a look at other company’s rates periodically due to the fact that insurance prices go up and down regularly. Even if you got the best deal on Discovery coverage last year there may be better deals available now. Forget all the misinformation about auto insurance because you’re going to get a crash course in one of the best ways to remove unneeded coverages and save money.

Insurance rates and discounts

Buying insurance is not cheap, but discounts can save money and there are some available that can help lower your rates. Certain reductions will be credited at quote time, but some must be specifically requested before they will apply.

  • Life Insurance – Not every insurance company offers life insurance, but if they do you may earn a discount if you purchase auto and life insurance together.
  • Low Mileage – Fewer annual miles on your Land Rover could qualify for slightly better prices than normal.
  • Good Driver Discount – Drivers who avoid accidents may receive a discount up to 45% on Discovery coverage than drivers with accident claims.
  • Accident Forgiveness Coverage – This one is not really a discount per se, but some companies like Libery Mutual, Geico and Allstate allow you one accident before raising your premiums with the catch being you have to be claim-free before the accident.
  • Drivers Education – Make teen driver coverage more affordable by requiring them to participate in a local driver’s education class if it’s offered in school.
  • Driving Data Discount – Drivers that enable their company to look at driving patterns by installing a telematics device such as State Farm’s In-Drive could see a rate decrease if their driving habits are good.
  • Sign Early and Save – A few insurance companies offer discounts for switching policies before your current policy expires. You can save around 10% with this discount.
  • Passenger Safety Discount – Vehicles with factory air bags or motorized seat belts may earn rate discounts of up to 25% or more.
  • Early Payment Discounts – If you can afford to pay the entire bill rather than paying in monthly installments you may have a lower total premium amount.
  • Driver Safety – Taking a course that instructs on driving safety is a good idea and can lower rates and also improve your driving technique.

Consumers should know that some credits don’t apply to the entire cost. Most cut specific coverage prices like comprehensive or collision. Just because you may think all the discounts add up to a free policy, you’re out of luck.

Situations that may require an agent’s advice

When it comes to buying adequate coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is not a “perfect” insurance plan. Every situation is different.

For example, these questions may help you determine if you may require specific advice.

  • What if I don’t agree with a claim settlement offer?
  • When can my company non-renew my policy?
  • Does coverage extend to a rental car in a foreign country?
  • When should I not file a claim?
  • Is borrowed equipment or tools covered if stolen or damaged?
  • Am I covered when using my vehicle for business?
  • How can I force my company to pay a claim?
  • What is covered by UM/UIM coverage?
  • Is my camper covered by my car insurance policy?

If you’re not sure about those questions but you know they apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.

Truth in car insurance advertising

Well-known car insurance companies like Progressive, Geico, Allstate and State Farm consistently run television and radio advertisements. They all tend to make the same promise of big savings just by switching your policy. That’s great but how can every company charge lower premium rates? It’s all in the numbers.

Most companies can use profiling for the type of customer that earns them the most money. One example of a driver they prefer could possibly be between the ages of 30 and 50, has never had a policy lapse, and drives less than 5,000 miles a year. A driver that meets those criteria receive the lowest rate quotes and therefore will save money with a new company.

People who are not a match for these standards may receive more expensive rates with the end result being the customer buying from a different company. If you listen closely, the ads state “people who switch” but not “all drivers who get quotes” save the amount stated. This is how insurance companies can make those statements.

Because of the profiling, it’s extremely important to compare many company’s auto insurance rates. Because you never know with any certainty which company will fit your personal profile best.

Coverages available on your policy

Having a good grasp of a car insurance policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage for your vehicles. Car insurance terms can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.

Liability coverages – Liability coverage provides protection from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have values of 50/100/50 which stand for a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.

Liability insurance covers claims like pain and suffering, repair costs for stationary objects, funeral expenses, bail bonds and attorney fees. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but you should buy as high a limit as you can afford.

Medical costs insurance – Med pay and PIP coverage kick in for immediate expenses such as funeral costs, surgery, chiropractic care, hospital visits and X-ray expenses. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you do not have health coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants as well as getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage

UM/UIM Coverage – This protects you and your vehicle when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered losses include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your 1995 Land Rover Discovery.

Due to the fact that many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked. Most of the time these limits are set the same as your liablity limits.

Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – This coverage covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive can pay for claims such as damage from getting keyed, damage from a tornado or hurricane, rock chips in glass and hitting a deer. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.

Collision – Collision coverage covers damage to your Discovery caused by collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision coverage pays for things like colliding with a tree, sustaining damage from a pot hole and backing into a parked car. This coverage can be expensive, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Keep this in mind

When trying to cut insurance costs, it’s a bad idea to buy poor coverage just to save money. In many cases, an insured dropped physical damage coverage only to regret they didn’t purchase enough coverage. Your goal should be to purchase a proper amount of coverage at a price you can afford while still protecting your assets.
