Learning about specific coverages of your auto insurance policy can be of help when determining the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. The terms used in a policy can be impossible to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
This covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims such as damage from flooding, vandalism, rock chips in glass and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The most you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for bills for chiropractic care, nursing services, ambulance fees and hospital visits. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance program or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and will also cover if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not available in all states and may carry a deductible
Collision insurance pays for damage to your NSX caused by collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, sideswiping another vehicle, damaging your car on a curb, crashing into a building and hitting a parking meter. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from lower value vehicles. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Liability coverage provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on people or other property. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You might see policy limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Alternatively, you may have one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims like medical expenses, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, repair costs for stationary objects and court costs. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but you should buy higher limits if possible.
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your Acura NSX.
Because many people carry very low liability coverage limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Usually the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Checking in from Portland, ME. Compared quite a few companies. Saved about $30 a month. State Farm was the cheapest for me. Even increased my liability limits.
Just my two cents. Live in the eastern part of Springfield, Massachusetts. I compared lots of rates. Saved roughly $30 a month. Progressive was the best choice for me. Good multi-policy discounts. My Acura doesn’t have full coverage.
Cheap is not always the best policy. I’m in the west part of Buffalo, NY. Received quotes with American Family, Sentry, and a few others for my Acura and I’m now saving $19 a month.
Not sure what I should be paying. I’m just west of Jersey City, NJ. I got free prices from GEICO, Eastwood, and Hanover for my 1996 Acura NSX and saved just over $80 a year. Left Erie to switch. Thankfully I’m not a high risk driver.
I compared a lot of rate quotes for a 1996 Acura NSX in Knoxville, TN. Ended up at right around $60 every six months with AAA. Left Eastwood to switch. Online quotes are the way to go.
I found cheap 1996 Acura NSX insurance in Houston, Texas with 21st Century.
Progressive was cheapest for my 1996 Acura NSX in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
If you have a clean record and are close to Las Vegas, NV, check out 21st Century. I saved quite a bit. Left MetLife to switch. I don’t insure for physical damage though.
If you’re a decent driver and live around Spokane, WA, check out 21st Century. They seem to be cheaper. Insured with Auto-Owners before. Thankfully I’m not a high risk driver. Full coverage costs too much.
I’m in Rockford, IL. Got quotes with 21st Century, AAA, and some I forget for my 1996 Acura NSX and I think I am saving around $20 each month. Not sure if rates are cheaper online or through an agent. I dropped full coverage awhile back.
Not sure if this is cheap. From a town just southwest of Detroit, Michigan. I got free prices from State Farm, Auto-Owners, Erie, and Hartford for my Acura and saved around $70 a year. Insured with Western Auto Insurance before. I’m a pretty low risk driver. You can get a rate quote online. Book value doesn’t justify full coverage anymore.
Well-written and thought out article. I’m in the north part of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Quoted prices online for a 1996 Acura NSX. Ended up at about $90 savings annually. Went with State Farm. Left USAA to switch. I have a teen driver too. I only have liability coverage on it.
I live just outside Nampa, ID and for me GEICO had the lowest quote. My new agent seems to be really good.
