Many different elements are used in the calculation when pricing auto insurance. Some are pretty understandable such as your driving history, although some other factors are not quite as obvious like your continuous coverage and annual miles driven.
The itemized list below are most of the major factors used by companies to determine premiums.
The price of auto insurance can be rather high, but you may qualify for discounts that could help you make your next renewal payment. Some trigger automatically when you quote, but some need to be inquired about in order for you to get them.
A little note about advertised discounts, most discount credits are not given to the overall cost of the policy. Most only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like comp or med pay. So when it seems like it’s possible to get free car insurance, it’s just not the way it works.
A list of insurance coverage companies and some of the premium reductions they offer are outlined below.
Before you buy a policy, ask every prospective company what discounts are available to you. Some discounts listed above may not apply in your area.

Knowing the specifics of your insurance policy can help you determine which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. Insurance terms can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Below you’ll find typical coverages available from insurance companies.
Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against things such as hitting a deer, fire damage and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout your insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage should not be overlooked. Usually the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Collision coverage pays for damage to your Accord resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision can pay for things such as sideswiping another vehicle, crashing into a building, hitting a parking meter and rolling your car. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
This coverage can cover damage that occurs to people or other property. This coverage protects you against other people’s claims, and doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see values of 100/300/100 that means you have a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage protects against things like attorney fees, medical expenses, court costs and repair costs for stationary objects. How much liability should you purchase? That is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
Med pay and PIP coverage pay for short-term medical expenses for things like doctor visits, hospital visits and funeral costs. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not available in all states and may carry a deductible
Budget-friendly insurance is available online and from local insurance agents, so you should compare both to have the best selection. Some insurance providers do not offer price quotes online and these regional carriers work with independent insurance agencies.
We covered a lot of techniques to get a better price on 1997 Honda Accord insurance. The key thing to remember is the more companies you get premium rates for, the better your chances of lowering your premium rates. You may even discover the lowest car insurance rates are with some of the smallest insurance companies. Cheap is not always the best policy. I’m in Newark, NJ. I quoted with State Farm, American Family, and Encompass for my Honda and I think I saved about $20 each month. I got a quote from their website. Not worth enough to pay for comprehensive and collision.
