The only drawback to doing it this way is that you can’t choose which companies you want to price. So if you want to select specific providers to compare prices, we have a page of insurance companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.

Affordable insurance coverage rates with discounts

Insurance coverage is expensive, but there may be some discounts to cut the cost considerably. Many of these discounts will be applied automatically when you get a quote, but less common discounts must be asked for before you get the savings. If you check and find you aren’t receiving every discount available, you could be getting lower rates.

  • Pay Early and Save – By making one initial payment rather than paying monthly you may have a lower total premium amount.
  • Auto/Life Discount – Insurance companies who offer life insurance give a discounted rate on car insurance if you buy life insurance from them.
  • Braking Control Discount – Cars, trucks, and SUVs that have anti-lock braking systems can stop better under adverse conditions so companies give up to a 10% discount.
  • Membership in Organizations – Participating in a civic or occupational organization could earn you a nice discount on your next renewal.

Drivers should understand that some of the credits will not apply to the entire cost. Most cut the price of certain insurance coverages like comprehensive or collision. Even though it may seem like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, it just doesn’t work that way.

Tailor your insurance coverage to you

When it comes to buying coverage for your vehicles, there is no cookie cutter policy. Every insured’s situation is different so your insurance needs to address that. These are some specific questions might point out whether or not you may require specific advice.

  • Is there coverage for injuries to my pets?
  • Is borrowed equipment or tools covered if stolen or damaged?
  • Which companies will insure high-risk drivers?
  • Why am I required to get a high-risk car insurance policy?
  • Will filing a claim cost me more?
  • Does my insurance cover damage caused when ticketed for reckless driving?
  • Do I have coverage if my license is suspended?
  • Do I have coverage for damage caused while driving under the influence?
  • Is a new car covered when I drive it off the dealer lot?

If you’re not sure about those questions but you know they apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, simply complete this short form or go to this page to view a list of companies.

Information about specific coverages

Learning about specific coverages of insurance can be of help when determining the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Insurance terms can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. These are the usual coverages available from insurance companies.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)

This coverage protects you and your vehicle from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your Nissan 350Z.

Because many people have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is a good idea. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for short-term medical expenses for rehabilitation expenses, pain medications, funeral costs, doctor visits and chiropractic care. They can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover you and your occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Auto collision coverage

Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage from colliding with another car or object. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision coverage protects against claims like crashing into a ditch, colliding with another moving vehicle and rolling your car. This coverage can be expensive, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Comprehensive insurance

This will pay to fix damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive coverage protects against things like falling objects, hitting a bird, fire damage and a broken windshield. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Liability insurance

Liability insurance can cover damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people. This coverage protects you against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.

Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show policy limits of 25/50/25 that means you have a limit of $25,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $50,000, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Another option is a combined limit that pays claims from the same limit without having the split limit caps.

Liability insurance covers things like pain and suffering, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, bail bonds and structural damage. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but consider buying as much as you can afford.
