Auto insurance companies don’t always advertise every available discount very clearly, so the following list contains a few of the more common and also the lesser-known credits that you can use to lower your rates.
Don’t be shocked that most credits do not apply to the entire cost. Some only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like comp or med pay. If you do the math and it seems like it’s possible to get free car insurance, it’s just not the way it works.
A list of companies and their possible discounts are detailed below.
If you need affordable car insurance quotes, ask each company or agent which discounts you may be entitled to. Some credits may not be offered in your area.

Having a good grasp of a car insurance policy aids in choosing the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Car insurance terms can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. These are the usual coverages found on the average car insurance policy.
This coverage protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people in an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You might see values of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property.
Liability insurance covers claims like repair costs for stationary objects, bail bonds and legal defense fees. How much liability should you purchase? That is a personal decision, but buy as much as you can afford.
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your Audi A3.
Due to the fact that many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is important protection for you and your family.
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for immediate expenses like funeral costs, surgery, pain medications and nursing services. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Collision insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage protects against claims like rolling your car, sustaining damage from a pot hole, hitting a mailbox, colliding with another moving vehicle and scraping a guard rail. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive can pay for claims like falling objects, damage from flooding, damage from a tornado or hurricane and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The maximum amount your car insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider dropping full coverage.
While you’re price shopping online, it’s a bad idea to skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. There are many occasions where someone sacrificed liability coverage limits only to discover later that they should have had better coverage. Your focus should be to purchase plenty of coverage at an affordable rate but still have enough coverage for asset protection.
More affordable car insurance is possible both online as well as from independent agents, and you need to comparison shop both to have the best chance of lowering rates. Some insurance providers do not offer the ability to get quotes online and most of the time these small insurance companies only sell coverage through local independent agencies.
