Did a good deal turn out to be an underperforming, overpriced car insurance policy? Trust us when we tell you many drivers have buyer’s remorse.
Due to the abundance of choices, it’s difficult to find the right insurance company.
You should make it a habit to price shop coverage every six months because prices change regularly. Just because you had the best deal on Accord Crosstour coverage at your last renewal a different company probably has better rates today. Block out anything you think you know about car insurance because you’re going to get a crash course in the things you must know in order to find better rates and still maintain coverage.
All the larger car insurance companies like State Farm and Allstate allow consumers to get price estimates online. This process is very simple as you just enter into a form. After you complete the form, their system pulls your driving and credit reports and returns a price based on many factors. Online price estimates simplifies rate comparisons, but having to visit each company’s website and repetitively type in the same information is repetitive and time-consuming. But it’s absolutely necessary to perform this step in order to find the best price on car insurance.
The better way to compare rates
An easier way to get multiple rate quotes makes use of a single form to get prices from many companies. It’s a real time-saver, eliminates repetitive work, and makes rate comparisons much more efficient. Immediately after submitting the form, it is rated with multiple companies and you can pick your choice of the quote results.
If the quotes result in lower rates, you simply finish the application and buy the policy. It takes less than 15 minutes and may save quite a bit of money.
In order to compare rates using this form now, simply click here to open in new window and begin entering your coverage information. If you have your current policy handy, we recommend you type in coverages and limits identical to your current policy. This ensures you will get rate comparison quotes based on identical coverages.
Some insurers do not advertise every disount available in a way that’s easy to find, so we break down some of the more common in addition to some of the lesser obvious credits available to bring down your rates. If you aren’t receiving every discount available, it’s possible you qualify for a lower rate.
Discounts save money, but please remember that most discounts do not apply to the entire cost. The majority will only reduce specific coverage prices like comprehensive or collision. Even though it may seem like adding up those discounts means a free policy, it’s just not the way it works.
A few popular companies and the discounts they provide are outlined below.
Before buying, ask every company to give you their best rates. Some of the earlier mentioned discounts might not be offered on policies everywhere. If you would like to view companies who offer car insurance discounts, click this link.
When it comes to choosing the right insurance coverage, there really is no one size fits all plan. Everyone’s needs are different so this has to be addressed. For instance, these questions may help highlight whether you would benefit from professional advice.
If you don’t know the answers to these questions then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.
Having a good grasp of your policy can help you determine which coverages you need and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Shown next are typical coverages found on most insurance policies.
Comprehensive coverages
Comprehensive insurance covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like hail damage, damage from getting keyed and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The maximum amount a insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Liability coverage
This can cover injuries or damage you cause to other people or property by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have liability limits of 50/100/50 that means you have a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and property damage coverage for $50,000. Another option is one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability insurance covers things like structural damage, medical expenses, medical services and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Collision protection
Collision coverage will pay to fix damage to your Accord Crosstour caused by collision with an object or car. You have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision insurance covers claims such as scraping a guard rail, hitting a parking meter, colliding with a tree and backing into a parked car. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to bump up the deductible to bring the cost down.
Coverage for medical payments
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for short-term medical expenses such as EMT expenses, ambulance fees, chiropractic care, dental work and funeral costs. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. It covers you and your occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage

I think I’m paying too much. I live in a small town just outside of Lincoln, Nebraska. I quoted with Western Auto Insurance, AIG Insurance, Hanover, and Nationwide for my Honda and saved just over $90 a year. Teenage drivers are expensive! Not sure if rates are cheaper online or not.
