Lots of things are part of the calculation when premium rates are determined. Some are pretty understandable like an MVR report, but some are not quite as obvious like where you live or how safe your car is.It’s important that you understand the rating factors that go into determining the rates you pay for auto insurance. If you have some idea of what influences your rates, this enables informed choices that could result in lower premium levels.
The list below includes some of the things companies use to determine your prices.
Having a good grasp of your insurance policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.
Collision – This coverage covers damage to your Q70 resulting from colliding with another car or object. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against claims such as hitting a parking meter, hitting a mailbox, backing into a parked car and sideswiping another vehicle. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Drivers also have the option to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Comprehensive insurance – Comprehensive insurance coverage pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, vandalism and hitting a bird. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.
Liability coverage – This coverage protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on other people or property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see values of 50/100/50 that translate to a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property.
Liability can pay for claims such as pain and suffering, medical expenses, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and medical services. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but you should buy as much as you can afford.
Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your 2015 Infiniti Q70.
Since many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
Coverage for medical expenses – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for bills such as rehabilitation expenses, dental work and nursing services. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if you lack health insurance entirely. Medical payments and PIP cover all vehicle occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
While you’re price shopping online, never reduce coverage to reduce premium. There are many occasions where consumers will sacrifice uninsured motorist or liability limits only to regret that a couple dollars of savings turned into a financial nightmare. Your focus should be to find the BEST coverage for the lowest cost and still be able to protect your assets.
Lower-priced auto insurance is attainable on the web as well as from insurance agents, so you need to quote insurance with both to have the best selection. Some insurance companies don’t offer online quoting and these regional carriers only sell through independent agents.
