How to know if you need help

When it comes to buying the best auto insurance coverage, there is no perfect coverage plan. Everyone’s situation is a little different.

For instance, these questions may help you determine if your insurance needs would benefit from professional advice.

  • Who is covered by my policy?
  • How does medical payments coverage work?
  • Am I covered by my spouse’s policy after a separation?
  • Where can I find high-risk insurance?
  • Do I need rental car coverage?
  • Do I need replacement cost coverage?
  • Are rock chip repairs covered?
  • Does my insurance cover damage caused when ticketed for reckless driving?
  • Can I rent a car in Mexico?
  • Does my car insurance cover rental cars?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, take a second and complete this form.

Auto insurance 101

Understanding the coverages of car insurance helps when choosing the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.

Medical expense insurance

Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for short-term medical expenses for things like funeral costs, rehabilitation expenses, chiropractic care and hospital visits. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover all vehicle occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers

This provides protection from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and damage to your Porsche Boxster.

Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is a good idea.

Comprehensive (Other than Collision)

Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.

Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as damage from getting keyed, damage from a tornado or hurricane and fire damage. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Liability car insurance

Liability coverage can cover damage or injury you incur to people or other property that is your fault. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.

Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You might see policy limits of 100/300/100 that translate to a limit of $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property.

Liability coverage pays for things like emergency aid, legal defense fees, pain and suffering and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but you should buy higher limits if possible.

Collision insurance

Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from a collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision coverage protects against claims like hitting a mailbox, colliding with a tree, driving through your garage door and sideswiping another vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. You can also bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
