Knowing the specifics of your insurance policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage for your vehicles. Insurance terms can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.
Comprehensive auto coverage
This covers damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like a broken windshield, rock chips in glass and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The highest amount your insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Medical payments and PIP coverage
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for short-term medical expenses such as funeral costs, surgery and prosthetic devices. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants as well as if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Liability car insurance
This coverage provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people that is your fault. It protects you from claims by other people. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show values of 25/50/25 that translate to a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Another option is a combined limit which combines the three limits into one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability coverage protects against things such as medical services, pain and suffering, court costs and emergency aid. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying as much as you can afford.
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage
This provides protection when the “other guys” either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include hospital bills for your injuries as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is very important. Most of the time these limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Collision coverage protection
Collision insurance pays for damage to your RAV4 Hybrid resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage pays for claims like hitting a mailbox, scraping a guard rail, driving through your garage door, rolling your car and crashing into a ditch. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Another option is to choose a higher deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
People leave their current company for a variety of reasons including poor customer service, policy non-renewal, being labeled a high risk driver and high prices. No matter why you want to switch, finding a new company is easier than you think.
As you quote insurance coverage, it’s a bad idea to skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. In many instances, an accident victim reduced collision coverage only to discover later that it was a big mistake. Your goal is to find the BEST coverage for the lowest price while still protecting your assets.
