Searching for cheap car insurance on the internet may at first seem to be problematic for vehicle owners who are new to comparison shopping over the internet. With such a large choice of insurance companies available, how are we expected to be able to compare all the different companies and get the best pricing?

It’s a good idea to shop coverage around as often as possible because car insurance prices change regularly. Just because you had the best rates on X5 insurance on your last policy the chances are good that you can find a lower premium rate today. Block out anything you think you know about car insurance because we’re going to demonstrate one of the best ways to get good coverage at a lower rate.

Buy insurance coverage online

There are several ways to compare insurance coverage prices but some are easier and takes less work. You could spend your day talking to agents in your area, or you could save time and use the internet to accomplish the same thing much quicker.

Most of the best insurance companies participate in a marketplace that allows shoppers to send in one quote, and each participating company returns a rated price determined by their information. This system prevents you from having to do quote requests for each company.

The one downside to doing it this way is that you can’t choose which insurance companies to get pricing from. So if you prefer to choose from a list of companies to receive pricing from, we have a page of the cheapest insurance coverage companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.

It’s up to you how you get prices quotes, just make absolute certain that you use the exact same deductibles and coverage limits with every price quote. If you are comparing different data it’s impossible to determine the lowest rate for your BMW X5. Just slight variations in coverages can result in a big premium difference. And when comparing insurance coverage rates, know that comparing a wide range of rates increases your odds of finding better pricing.

Find hidden discounts on car insurance

Car insurance is not an enjoyable expense, but there are discounts available that you may not know about. Some discounts apply automatically when you complete an application, but a few need to be inquired about before being credited.

  • E-sign – Some companies give back up to $50 for buying your policy on your computer.
  • Anti-lock Brakes – Cars with ABS and/or traction control prevent accidents and earn discounts up to 10%.
  • Savings for New Vehicles – Buying a new car model is cheaper because new model year vehicles have to meet stringent safety requirements.
  • Resident Student – who are attending college and won’t have access to an insured vehicle may be able to be covered for less.
  • Sign Early and Save – Select car insurance companies give a discount for switching policies before your current coverage expires. You could save around 10% when you buy car insurance online.
  • Driving Data Discount – Drivers who agree to allow their company to track vehicle usage by using a telematics device in their vehicle such as Drivewise from Allstate or Snapshot from Progressive could possibly reduce rates as long as the data is positive.
  • Discounts for Cautious Drivers – Insureds who avoid accidents can pay as much as 50% less on X5 insurance compared to rates paid by drivers with frequent claims.
  • Military Discounts – Having a deployed family member could mean lower rates.

Discounts reduce rates, but you should keep in mind that most discounts do not apply to the entire cost. Most only cut the price of certain insurance coverages like collision or personal injury protection. Just because you may think all those discounts means the company will pay you, you’re out of luck.

A list of companies and a summarized list of policyholder discounts are shown below.

  • Progressive may have discounts that include multi-policy, continuous coverage, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, good student, and online signing.
  • AAA includes discounts for good student, pay-in-full, multi-car, education and occupation, and AAA membership discount.
  • Farmers Insurance offers premium reductions for electronic funds transfer, business and professional, switch companies, multi-car, and mature driver.
  • Geico has discounts for membership and employees, multi-vehicle, five-year accident-free, defensive driver, daytime running lights, multi-policy, and anti-theft.
  • Esurance has savings for online shopper, anti-theft, safety device, multi-policy, and multi-car.
  • SAFECO offers discounts including bundle discounts, safe driver, anti-lock brakes, drive less, accident prevention training, and teen safe driver.
  • State Farm offers discounts for multiple autos, Drive Safe & Save, Steer Clear safe driver discount, anti-theft, and student away at school.

When getting free car insurance quotes, it’s a good idea to every prospective company which discounts you may be entitled to. Tailor your auto insurance coverage to you

When choosing the best auto insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no “perfect” insurance plan. Every situation is different.

For example, these questions can help discover whether your personal situation might need an agent’s assistance.

  • How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
  • Can I make deliveries for my home business?
  • Do I pay less for low miles?
  • Do I have coverage if my license is suspended?
  • Is extra glass coverage worth it?
  • Why am I required to get a high-risk car insurance policy?

If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you, you might consider talking to a licensed agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, take a second and complete this form.

Coverage specifics

Knowing the specifics of your car insurance policy helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

Your UM/UIM coverage provides protection from other drivers when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your BMW X5.

Due to the fact that many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea.

Coverage for medical expenses

Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance reimburse you for immediate expenses such as X-ray expenses, funeral costs, pain medications, surgery and hospital visits. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers both the driver and occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not an option in every state and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Coverage for collisions

Collision coverage covers damage to your X5 resulting from colliding with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision coverage pays for claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, sideswiping another vehicle, driving through your garage door, scraping a guard rail and damaging your car on a curb. This coverage can be expensive, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive insurance covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You need to pay your deductible first then your comprehensive coverage will pay.

Comprehensive coverage pays for things such as falling objects, damage from getting keyed, damage from flooding and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider removing comprehensive coverage.

Liability coverages

Liability coverage protects you from injuries or damage you cause to people or other property that is your fault. It protects you against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.

It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have values of 25/50/25 that means you have $25,000 bodily injury coverage, $50,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000.

Liability coverage pays for things such as legal defense fees, medical expenses and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but buy as large an amount as possible.
